NIISP

Government of Uganda designed the National ICT Initiatives Support Programme to facilitate the creation of an ICT Innovation ecosystem and marketplace for Ugandan innovative digital products The growth of the ICT innovation ecosystem in Uganda has mainly been private sector led with minimal direct support from government. Unfortunately, this approach has not been very successful and it has created standalone and closed software applications that have not promoted innovation at a national level. The NIISP(National ICT Initiatives Support Programme) will tackle bottlenecks to creating a digital ecosystem by promoting the development and deployment of applications to create an open ecosystem in Uganda that shall enable the government, companies and individuals to innovate and reach new markets. The program shall: - Encourage innovation by providing opportunities to create applications to support service delivery; - Generate highly skilled jobs and wealth for individuals and companies that create applications for both government and the private sector; and - Improve the use of government data for ICT innovation and application development. The NIISP shall champion the creation of the ICT Innovation ecosystem to facilitate the growth and development of the software applications and innovations industry. The NIISP will focus on encouraging the creation of easy to consume and highly marketable digital products. Propella is one of the first business hubs in South Africa to be fully geared for Business 4.0. Exciting new IT and advanced manufacturing businesses share the same building to encourage cooperation between innovators in both sectors. The contract includes development milestones and commitments from the entrepreneur, as well as the anticipated date on which the enterprise will move into its own premises – making space for the next potentially disruptive new business. 3. Acceleration Once they have successfully proved they have a viable business concept during the incubation programme Propella is able to provide support to the owners and managers of companies ready to growth their business to the next level. The main offerings include: a. Funding Few financial institutions and venture capitalists in South Africa provide funding for new technology or early stage venture capital, as they are seen as high risk. Successful Propella incubatees who have established the potential to develop a successful and sustainable business are assisted in applying to various funders. Partnerships with other venture capital funds (Engeli Section 12J VCC and others) and financial institutions are among the options for start-up debt and equity funding. Some start-ups may also qualify for BBBEE enterprise development funding grants or loans. Propella also facilitates the creation of partnerships (like JV’s) with established companies. b. IDEA App - Guinea Bissau

IDEA App is a series of online incubation and mentoring programs created to make sure that thousands of early-stage entrepreneurs build their capacity and create viable enterprises in their regions, especially youth and women. IDEA App supports entrepreneurs from Guinea Bissau to turn this around by creating innovative solutions that can boost, protect or scale the most relevant value chains in the country while generating new decent job opportunities. How does the model work? - UNIDO set three IDEA Centers as implementation partners and undergo a “Training of Trainers” program to build their entrepreneurship program management and incubation capacity. The training consisted of 6 sessions covering topics from creating a mentors network to mastering the IDEA App platform to facilitating best practices. - Bridge for Billions co-manages the entrepreneurship program with the three IDEA Centers in Guinea Bissau: Agência Nacional do Empreendedorismo Juvenil (ANEJ), Innovalab and Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo (ADPP) - All program partners select altogether 60 entrepreneurs from Guinea Bissau and over 80 local and international mentors to participate in the IDEA App program. All of them are trained and onboarded during Kickoff Day. - As part of the program, all founders access structured guidance in 8 business tools, constant support from the incubation management team, personalized weekly mentorship, and a global community of founders, workshops, and sectorial resources. Internet and tablets are provided to the IDEA Centers by UNIDO to ensure all participants have the necessary tools to undergo the training. - Agência Nacional do Empreendedorismo Juvenil (ANEJ), Innovalab and Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo (ADPP) provide local support and knowledge to the founders, additional in-person workshops and resources, and physical space for founders to work from. - Entrepreneurs work in teams to develop their businesses while working weekly with volunteer mentors through the IDEA App platform. The five best and most impactful projects will receive up to €5,000 in funding.

GHATBI

GHATBI provides an incubator services platform exclusively in the agro-processing and technology sector that identifies, invests, nurtures and grows micro and SMEs in high-growth, high-impact, business-to-consumer (B2C) opportunities. It is the first incubator group of its kind in the Western Region of Ghana and currently has active portfolio companies under management in the health, wellness, beauty and organic fruit juice processing industries. GHATBI invests in and supports agro businesses that meet at least one or more of the below highlighted criteria: - Women-led and/or women-owned - Value-add to raw materials for domestic consumption - Alleviates youth unemployment, spurs job creation - Skills development, skills transfer GHATBI purchases equity stakes in all portfolio businesses in exchange for investing seed capital and providing management support. While the incubator has an initial “Made in Takoradi” theme with the city’s 500,000+ population, selective opportunities in the Greater Accra region and northern city of Tamale will also be considered for investment and support. BIC Ethiopia, funded by the EU, aims at capacitating business incubators in supporting agri-tech and agri-business start-ups and MSMEs to improve market access, generate higher income and create jobs. BIC Ethiopia will enable existing and new incubators supporting high potential start-ups with an innovative business model addressing market needs and potential in terms of job creation and income generation, and enhance business incubators’ ability to unlock the potential of agri-tech and agri-business by delivering the necessary tools to enable business growth along different stages of maturity. The BIC Ethiopia project will be implemented by sequa gGmbH (lead), Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations, adelphi gGmbH, Growth Africa, ice Hawassa and Stiftung Menschen für Menschen. The project will run until January 2026. BIC Ethiopia is part of BIC Africa. BIC Africa is a regional network that aims to support selected business incubators (BIs). It facilitates capacity building, helps BIs benefit from the exchanges and cooperation with other initiatives, improves the connection between European and African innovation hubs to develop international collaboration, explores business opportunities with European companies, and ensures the quality standards are respected in all supported incubators. BIC Africa is commissioned by the European Union and implemented by EBN. The project will run from 2021 to 2025. Twende

Twende is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering local community members to improve their quality of life through the innovation and implementation of low-cost technologies. As an innovation center of Tanzanian students and instructors, Twende aims to merge local experience and technical knowledge into affordable innovations. Technologies built at Twende are affordable, comprised of locally available materials, and address a specific social need. Through school and community workshops, Twende supports aspiring entrepreneurs in the creation of their own solutions to community problems. Led by Tanzanian inventor Bernard Kiwia, Twende aims to be a beacon of social innovation and technological empowerment in Arusha, Tanzania and around the globe. Very few technologies currently address the needs of rural Tanzanian communities. And those that do, often fail to substantially improve quality of life in villages for following reasons. 1. Rural technologies often are designed and manufactured abroad, leaving Tanzanian villagers unable to repair their devices, especially when materials are not locally available. 2. These technologies are not developed with a rich understanding of local needs and resources, often making them irrelevant or impractical. For example, technologies that require electricity are useless for most Tanzanian villagers who do not have access to or cannot afford electricity. 3. Most rural technologies are too expensive for the average villager. These problems have left an estimated 30 million villagers without access to technology to charge phones, see at night, and harvest their crops. Not only would these villagers stand to benefit from more productive technologies, but so would the Tanzanian economy as a whole. Twende technologies address the aforementioned problems through the development of intermediate technologies that 1. utilize locally available materials, 2. are designed WITH rather than FOR village communities, 3. derive out of village needs and imperative, 4. are inexpensive and affordable for villagers, 5. are able to be repaired locally. Twende is able to develop these technologies by engaging communities through community workshops and providing vital technical support and tools through its innovation center platform. Following the teachings of Amy Smith and her colleagues at MIT’s D-Lab, Twende has adopted a new model of community-based innovation called creative capacity building (CCB). Through technology workshops, Twende engages students and villagers in creating their own technologies to improve health and safety, save labor and time, and increase their incomes. Through an interactive, hands-on curriculum, people of all education levels are able to become active creators of technology, not just passive recipients. A key component of the follow-up to the CCB training is a space where people can come together, apply what they have learned to design, and build technologies that can positively affect their lives. The Twende workshop ideally serves as this nexus of creativity, where aspiring inventors can learn about new technologies, develop their mechanics and design skills, prototype their ideas, create technology products, incubate micro-enterprises and obtain guidance on how to market the technologies that they create. Workshop tools are available to all participating community members and maintained through a small fee.

ARM Labs

Labs by ARM 2.0 is designed to engage Nigerian post-MVP fintech startups in a series of activities aimed at exponentially advancing the growth of their companies within 12 weeks, while ensuring their investment-readiness. Selected startups will be provided with financial investment, distribution and access to investors. Participants are provided with office space, access to asset management firm ARM’s network and carefully selected mentors from the fintech industry who will provide hands-on support and valuable introductions. Applications for the second cohort of the accelerator closed on 30 December. It’s not clear if the accelerator will hold a third cohort or not, so keep an eye out for any announcement on upcoming application cycles. FabLab Libya

Our lab was founded by engineers who admired the idea and goals of a Fab Lab organization. It is registered as a civil society non-profit organization in Libya. Our lab basically provides public access to an adequately (but not fully) equipped Laboratory for digital fabrication and electronic innovation. It has been, so far, focusing in hosting training courses for kids and youth in programming, electronics and robotics, as well as running supervised DIY clubs for kids, various workshops and participating in events such as the first National Robotics championship in Libya. Furthermore, in pursuing its role as a STEAM education promoter in Libya, the lab has developed a curriculum for teaching programming to kids and contracted with a number of private elementary schools in Benghazi for teaching the curriculum to their students. One of the very successful projects carried out by the lab, so far, was the 100 youth engineers and the 100 youth programmers; in which a large number of school students participated in a hands-on learning style training course on the basics of programming and electronics using Arduino development panel. At the end of the course ,the students were able to build their own Arduino projects or Android applications and participated in an end-of-course competition. The lab has been providing the equipment required and the technical assistance for a number of more advanced college graduation projects. And this is the area which we want to work on further, by encouraging people ,specially electronic engineers and IT graduates, to engage in building their own (advanced) prototypes. Ultimately, our lab aims to become a real research and innovation center. Recently, Fab Lab Libya has engaged on a project by Expertise France concerned with entrepreneurship. Through this project members of the Fab Lab are being trained in entrepreneur coaching,where the lab is required to train and coach female entrepreneurs to establish their businesses. In addition to carrying out workshops on entrepreneurship to youth and specifically to university students.

The Recycle Up! Hub is a safe space for young Ghanaians to develop their professional skills, explore, collaborate and develop entrepreneurial ideas that promote the circular economy. We provide entrepreneurship education, mentoring and support services to young industrious Ghanaians to start businesses that help solve pressing societal challenges. The Recycle Up! Incubator seeks to contribute to the creation of a robust circular economy in Ghana where all resources are effectively used to maximize impact thereby avoiding waste. The ZongoVation Hub is a community technology innovation hub dedicated to the development and growth of young entrepreneurs and startups in the Zongo communities across Ghana. Twice a year, we run a national competition and accept a small number of startups (5 to 10) into our on-site 4-month program based in Addis Ababa. Our batches run February to May (Belg Batch) and August to November (Kiremt batch). We require founder teams of 2 to 3 entrepreneurs because we believe that startups have a better chance of success with more than one founder. We also think that it takes more than training and money to create a great company. So, we take a holistic approach to the support we give to our startups. RLabs is a South African award-winning non-profit company, established in 2009 in Bridgetown, Cape Town. We have since expanded the RLabs model to 23 countries across 5 continents impacting more than 20 million people through our work. The main aim of RLabs is to create environments and systems where people are impacted, empowered and transformed through HOPE, Innovation, Technology, Training and Economic Opportunities. To date, more than 200,000 people have accessed RLabs skills, training and economic empowerment programmes The RLabs innovation lab currently partners with a variety of international organizations, private companies and public sector partners to develop solutions to drive social change. Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative

The Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative (ECITI) is a non -profit company, established by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) in 2004. It was setup to facilitate the sustainable development for small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) in the information communication and technology (ICT) and film sectors in the Eastern Cape. Our programmes are designed to stimulate the Eastern Cape’s ICT sector with the aim to position the province as one of Africa’s leading centres for ICT excellence. Our incubation programme is designed to accelerate the successful development of entrepreneurial companies through various support resources and services. Incubation is offered to resident (in-house) companies in our East London head office and Queenstown satellite office. We also offer a virtual programme to companies based in other parts of the Eastern Cape province but want to benefit from our business support services geared to assist with the early stage development of their companies.
