Kalon Venture Partners will invest most of its capital in support of African entrepreneurs who are looking for growth capital to scale their businesses, which are disrupting traditional industries, e.g. banking, insurance, retail, media and entertainment. We have a highly experienced team to conduct detailed due diligences of potential investments to help reduce the business risk. The outcome of the DD will be presented to our Investment Committee for a decision. Propella is one of the first business hubs in South Africa to be fully geared for Business 4.0. Exciting new IT and advanced manufacturing businesses share the same building to encourage cooperation between innovators in both sectors. Support for the development of technologies for Smart Cities come through a partnership between Engeli Enterprise Development (EDD), a private sector business support company and Innovolve, the wholly owned commercialization company of Nelson Mandela University (NMU). Propella helps commercialize the research and development being conducted at the NMU, as well as other technology entrepreneurs who either approach Propella for support or who are identified by Propella. Prospective incubatees go through a rigorous selection process to qualify for access to the Propella and its support services. Once they are selected Propella facilitators assist with mentoring and the evaluation of business concepts. These have been customized for Propella. Entrepreneurs accepted by Propella sign a development contract based on an assessment of the company using the diagnostic tools. The contract includes development milestones and commitments from the entrepreneur, as well as the anticipated date on which the enterprise will move into its own premises – making space for the next potentially disruptive new business. 3. Acceleration Once they have successfully proved they have a viable business concept during the incubation programme Propella is able to provide support to the owners and managers of companies ready to growth their business to the next level. The main offerings include: a. Funding Few financial institutions and venture capitalists in South Africa provide funding for new technology or early stage venture capital, as they are seen as high risk. Successful Propella incubatees who have established the potential to develop a successful and sustainable business are assisted in applying to various funders. Partnerships with other venture capital funds (Engeli Section 12J VCC and others) and financial institutions are among the options for start-up debt and equity funding. Some start-ups may also qualify for BBBEE enterprise development funding grants or loans. Propella also facilitates the creation of partnerships (like JV’s) with established companies. b. Extended tenure Space permitting, Propella may offer companies ready for commercialization the opportunity to continue making use of the Propella facilities and support structure.

Naturally, the more knowledge you have, the more you will be able to exploit the power of Information and Communication Technology. History Rhodes University acquired its first computer in 1966, one which was housed in the Department of Physics. Computer Science was first introduced as a major subject under the auspices of the Department of Applied Mathematics in 1970 by the late Professor Rolf Braae. In 1972 the first post graduate courses were given. A separate Computer Science Department was established in 1980, but has continued to work in close cooperation with the other Mathematical Sciences Departments, with the Department of Physics and Electronics, and more recently with the Department of Information Systems. The Department was originally housed in the upper two levels of a three storey building, Struben, for many years, incorporating several large computer laboratories, academic and post graduate studies, and lecture facilities. However, the department grew tremendously, making new accommodation essential. Over several years, a new home for Computer Science and Information Systems was sought, and finally a donation from Dr Robin Hamilton made a new building possible. The building was completed in September 2001 and was officially opened in April 2002 as the Hamilton Building.

VUT Research offers students the opportunity to further their studies and complete a Degree in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) . It consists of a research project by dissertation and allows the student to further their knowledge, enhance their skills and improve their range of possible job opportunities. Students are encouraged to use their newly gained degree and Masters opportunity to better the communities around them. Having a Masters in Information Technology will also show the dedication and passion the student has for this field, as well as their efforts to better the community around them using their skills. The duration of the course is a minimum of two years and maximum of three years part-time study. The curriculum consists of a research project by dissertation. After completing a Masters in Information Technology, a graduate may find themselves in any wide variety of computerized environments. Their responsibilities may include maintenance of systems in use, systems analysis, design or programming of new systems, network administration, database administration and user support. Computerization is in most facets of modern society today which creates many opportunities for these students. The typical entry-level position is that of a programmer, with a quick advance to a senior level programmer and with further promotions to the level of Systems Analyst, Network Administration or Database Administrator.

This requires a considerable set of technical skills, including in-depth knowledge of database design and various programming languages.
