Land Accelerator Africa

In 2018, World Resources Institute (WRI) launched the Land Accelerator Africa, the world’s first training and mentorship program targeted specifically toward businesses that restore degraded forests, farmland and pasture. To support the AFR100 Initiative’s goal of restoring 100 million hectares of land by 2030, the Land Accelerator provides entrepreneurs across Africa with mentorship and networking opportunities, technical training and workshops to build up their storytelling and pitching skills. Participants leave the program more empowered to connect with potential investors so that they can take their business to the next stage of growth. The program has attracted nearly 1,400 applicants in Africa since 2018, and its 104 alumni from 34 countries report that they have created 11,200 jobs, worked with 56,000 farmers and restored 127,000 hectares. What does the program look like? In 2021, WRI and our partners at AFR100 and Fledge took a novel approach to the Land Accelerator Africa. We expanded the size of our cohort to the top 100 entrepreneurs from across the continent to join us for an all-virtual business accelerator. Restoration entrepreneurs were invited to apply from all sub-Saharan African countries, free of charge. The Top 100 benefited from: - 3 months of exclusive weekly trainings from experts. - 3 months of access to Fledge’s online lessons for start-ups. - Templates to create content to help your business thrive. - Weekly office hours with mentors who will lend their expertise. - Weekly networking sessions to speak with and learn from other entrepreneurs in your cohort. By the end of the program, entrepreneurs accessed the trainings and tools that they needed to complete: - A compelling one-minute pitch to hook investors, customers and potential partners. - A 10 to 12 slide pitch deck targeted toward investors. - An environmental indicator measurement, management and marketing plan. - A three- to five-year financial model to visualize their growth projections and to identify capital needs. - Increased confidence in their business’s mission and operations. The top 100 entrepreneurs also had the opportunity to apply for a Land Accelerator investment pack, which an expert panel awarded to the top entrepreneurs. Recipients of the investment packs benefited from: - An innovation grant of $5,000 or more. - A coaching meeting with a Land Accelerator organizer to develop an investment and innovation grant plan. - A 90-minute group session with members of the Land Accelerator mentor network, who provided tailored feedback. - A one-on-one call with a Land Accelerator mentor to provide feedback and a thorough review of all the materials submitted throughout the program. - The opportunity to present a three-minute business pitch at the virtual Land Accelerator Impact Days, a two-day event that brings together the awardees and investors from across the continent. - The opportunity to meet fellow entrepreneurs in-person for a week-long bootcamp in Nairobi, Kenya and learn from both leading entrepreneurs and trainers.

The increase in urban population in African cities has resulted to diversification and an upsurge in transport needs. Both public transport and private car use have drastically risen resulting to road congestion and air pollution. This nonetheless, provides a huge opportunity to provide transformative urban mobility solutions that can offer more travel options, reduce the travel time, cost and risk, and provide comfort for its users. Africa Transformative Mobility Accelerator (ATMA) admitted 8 startups for the 2020/2021 cohort. The priority countries were Kenya and Uganda. Through a competitive process, the program aimed to admit transformative, practical, well researched and possibly tested solutions to urban mobility challenges in African Cities. Currently, we offer four distinctive undergraduate programmes, that is, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology, Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. In addition as from may 2017, we have launched two masters programmes namely; MSc in Information Technology and MSc in Computer Science. In response to our customer demand we run diploma programmes to cater for school leavers namely; Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), International Diploma in Computer Studies (IDCS), International Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies (IADCS) to prepare them for more advanced training in IT. For the professional track we offer Cisco Academy programme (Level 1-4) and the International Driving License (ICDL). These programmes are taught by highly qualified and experienced academic staff that are very committed to academic excellence. The programmes are constantly reviewed to reflect the rapidly changing demands in the ICT industry. Through the dedicated efforts of the faculty and students, we have continued to produce highly competitive graduates who continue to make exceptional contribution to the ICT industry. The CIT department focuses on creating an environment of Innovation, where students and faculty get a platform to practice and demonstrate incredible problem solving abilities for various issues within our society. The department has highly skilled faculty members on various areas in ICT, who provide one on one attention to students within the class rooms, practical lab work and in the implementation of real life solutions using ICT. The department aims to produce highly competent and disciplined students, who are skilled in specific areas of ICT such as Computer Programming, Mobile Programming, Web Development, Databases, Systems Architecture, Network Engineers, among others. This is achieved by providing areas of concentrations that address the specific areas in our programs. Besides the normal course curriculum, the department organizes short courses in the form of Bootcamps to train students on new technologies and trends in ICT. Most of these short courses are sponsored by our partners and therefore availed for free to the students. Every year, the department runs an annual Design Thinking workshop themed ‘Impact Week’ in collaboration with our partners from Kirche in Aktion – Germany. The focus is to develops practical solutions for sustainable development through innovation. Through this event, leading Design Thinking coaches from SAP, Lufthansa, Volvo, among other leading organizations in Germany, Australia, and Switzerland. The CIT department has formed strong partnerships with local and international companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Dell EMC, Seven Seas, among others to ensure that students are exposed to global technologies, enabling them to experience a world-class ICT training, and have access to global career opportunities. Our alumni have excelled as entrepreneurs in the business and IT sector, as well as in the corporate sector, both locally and internationally. </p? The Innovation Center hosted by the CIT department enables students to develop innovations in a guided and professional way. The students are given local and international mentors for their ideas and support in marketing their ideas and selling them to the local and international markets.

The Department of Computer Science (DCS) was originally formed in 1969 as the Computing Centre, a Department in the Faculty of Engineering. In 1976, the Computing Centre moved to the Chiromo Campus where it occupied the purpose-built premises used by the School today. It was formally established in 1977 as the Institute of Computer Science whose mandate included academic as well as university ICT services. In the year 2002, and in the interest of realizing more focused management and efficiency of the two functions, ICS was split into two units i.e. ICTC and SCI now department of Computer Science (DCS). The department takes its name from the core competencies that it seeks to nurture: Computing, to cover the theory and science of computation and Informatics to exemplify the practical outworking of this theory in technology and application. The department is a regional leader in research, research and development (R&D) and advanced education in computing. It was the first to offer Bachelors and Postgraduate degrees in Computer Science in the region. Department of Computer Science is located at the picturesque Chiromo Campus off Riverside Drive within the College of Biological and Physical Science of the University of Nairobi. The department is housed in a two storey building with office facilities for over 50 members of staff, a computer room, several computer labs with a fully networked modern computer infrastructure, a library and several classrooms. It is charged with teaching and research activities. It has eleven on-going and very competitive programmes: Diploma (Computer Science), BSc. Incubation is a process of supporting successful development of startup companies through provision of resources and services, which the startup companies do not have. At C4DLab we take startups which are multi-disciplinary but have a computing element. And with initiatives like the TUMI Startup Accelerator, startups are equipped and trained in the ways of taking their businesses to the next stage Research and Product Development C4Dlab has established several partnerships with government, private sector and multinationals to promote data driven policy making through research. With funding from various organizations and utilizing capacity at the University, C4DLab has championed development of policy and strategy documents founded on rigorous research. Chandaria Business Innovation & Incubation Centre

The directorate works to foster the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Kenyatta University through establishment of innovation and entrepreneurship programmes that have strong links with industry. Industry collaborations are critical for skills development (education and training), the generation, acquisition, and adoption of knowledge (innovation and technology transfer), and the promotion of entrepreneurship (start-ups and spin-offs). The directorate also works to enhance coordination of Research and Development (R&D) agendas and avoid duplications, stimulate additional private R&D investments, and exploit synergies and complementarities of scientific and technological capabilities. This collaborations also expands the relevance of research carried out in Kenyatta University, foster the commercialization of R&D outcomes, and increase the mobility of labour between Kenyatta University and industry. The industry benefits through increases in the propensity of firms to introduce new products and to patent. Kenyatta University (KU) established Chandaria Business Innovation and Incubation Centre as a dedicated innovation and incubation hub. This arose since it is one of Kenyatta University’s major strategic goals aimed at responding to societal needs. Innovation is a key driver of long- term economic growth, the primary basis for competitiveness in world markets and part of the response to many societal challenges. While public expectations from technological innovation are evolving in line with social concerns (e.g. unemployment, sustainable development, aging populations), the innovation process itself is facing major challenges, especially in developing countries such as Kenya.
